what do you think this samurai proverb means?

what is the real meaning behind this old samurai saying? "Go into battle determined to die, and you will survive. Go into battle hoping to live and you will surely die."

It is a mentality. You actually fight different when you are afraid to die. But if you are in the frame of mind that you can't be hurt any further than an accepted death, it is easy to go all out.

This is true of kamikaze pilots, as well as the current Al Kaida terrorist. There is no stronger fear than death, but if you wholeheartedly believe you have a better position waiting, it is easier to be unfearing and give it your all.
