Would the Mongols had defeated Japan if their fleets were not mostly destroyed?

Their is no way the samurai could of kept up with the horse archers.

I believe the answer is NO. The reason being, the Japanese were a VERY determined and disciplined people. The country has a lot of mountainous terrain.

While the Mongols would have eventually done a LOT of damage to large areas of Japan, they were used to fighting in wide open plains. The Japanese, if worse came to worst, would have waged a guerilla war against them. I do not believe they would have been able to maintain any long-term stable force on mainland Japan.

You mentioned the horse archers, but don't forget, the Japanese had some excellent horse archers as well and many super highly skilled archers. They would have widdled their numbers down pretty quickly, even though they may have suffered a lot of casualties to do it.

They certainly were more capable of confronting that threat than the europeans were. The Russians remained in captivity for 500 years and the Mongols defeated everyone single european army of any consequence all the way to the Atlantic.
