I would like to visit Hong Kong during chinese new year period.?

Will the shops be open generally? I would like to go for some sight seeing, shopping & tasting of Hong Kong's local favourites like dim sum etc. Any recommendations for this period? I am also looking at some hotels which are not so expensive. Appreciate your advise. Thanks.

Hong Kong is like New York . . . it never sleeps! I've visited Hong Kong for the last four Chinese New Years (and am going back in February) and I've never had a problem with places being closed, etc. I'm sure the banks and post offices and government offices are closed for the holiday, but places catering to tourists are opening and booming with business!

I stay at the Evergreen Hotel (just off Nathan Road in Kowloon). It's a great budget hotel for a family of four to stay in one room, but it might not be as budget friendly for one or two people . . . in other words, you might be able to find cheaper places. It does include breakfast and computer access.
