What kind of bullet is this?

I found a bullet stuck in a piece of iron ore in the ocean in NC. It was right at the shoreline, and the bullet was brilliantly shiny when I found it. I thought it was copper, but after looking around, I think its brass. I am looking to have it identified. You can see the groove where it was held in its original shell, and the iron piece it was lodged in is hard with black and rust, and has seashells stuck in it. Is this American, Japanese? Its about 2 inches long and boat-tapered. Please help!

Its unfired because theres no rifling imprinted on it. 2 inches would roughly equal a 50 BMG round bullet
