I am doing a Spanish project and we have to write a long answer about how Spanish culture is somehow related to Chinese culture. I know it seems impossible, but there's some history behind it. I can't find any information about how their related. -.- help please!
Spain, Portugal and China:
During the "Age of Discovery" in 1510, Portuguese sailors established a port in Goa (India), the following year they conquered the city of Malacca (Malaysia). In 1513, the Indian Viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque commissioned for a cousin of Christopher Columbus, Rafael Perestrello, to travel to China in order to establish trade relations with the Chinese. He traded with the Chinese in 1516 but was permitted travel no further than Guangzhou (Canton).
By 1583 the Portuguese traders in Guangzhou numbered in the hundreds and would increase to the tens of thousands over the next century. They traded with Chinese, Malaysian, Filipino and Japanese, and it was between 1580 and 1640 that trade with the city of Macau flourished as the crowns of Portugal and Spain united under King Phillip II.
The Spanish-Portuguese-Chinese trade was very profitable, and upon his ascension to the throne, Phillip was advised not to interfere in the trade routes. In 1587 he renamed Macau "The City of the Name of God".
The alliance between Spain and Portugal, however, meant that Portuguese settlements in Asia became targets of The Netherlands (who were fighting for independence from Spain). In 1622, 800 Dutch attackers in the city of Macau were succesfully vanquished by a joint Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese force.
Over the years, trade and social relations between Spain, Portugal and China flourished. The arrival of the Jesuits and Dominicans converted many of the Chinese and Japanese to Roman Catholicism, but the discovery of America and the increase in exploration, colonisation and trade with the New World meant that trade with China diminished. Furthermore, Japan's fear of missionary influence in it's country led to the ruling Shogun to seal off all foreign relations.
Trade in that area diminished until 1685, when all relations between Spain, Portugal and China eventually ended.
Spain and Taiwan:
In 1626, the Spanish established a trade settlement in Northern region of Taiwan and named it "Fuerte San Salvador", they named the area "Santissima Trinidad".
In 1629, the Spanish expanded the settlement to the Northwestern region of Taiwan and built a wooden fort in the nearby city of Tamsui, naming it "Fuerte Santo Domingo".
The fort was demolished in 1636 by the local people in response to the Spanish Governor's increase in taxes. It was rebuilt with stone the following year, but in 1642 the Dutch expelled the Spanish from the nearby city of Keelung and took over the Santo Domingo Fort.
