Basket Lid

I can't get the lid off of the filter housing attached to the pump motor. I need to clean the leaves out of the basket. I don't want to use something that is going to ruin the O-ring inside the lid.
i usually put a piece of wood through the handle to get a little leverage on it. something like a broom stick. if it extends about a foot off center just a little force will be needed to break the seal free. it is not unusual for this to be stuck.
