Archaic Ritual
Posted in Antiques on 01/13/2011 03:24 am by adminWhen did humans emerge and how far back do religious rituals go?
Estimates range from 130,000 k year ago to 195,000 k year ago (see link below) for the emergence of our species, Homo Sapiens ('archaic' as opposed to 'modern', that is). I was very interested to read that a stone snake's head ritual (the original 'Serpent' one might say!) dates back to as many as 70,000 k year ago (see second link below).
How far back do humans go and how far back does one go to find evidence of religion?

I heard mankind may have been around even longer then that, but your dates are probably accurate.
Rituals might be older than mankind itself. Neanderthals have constantly been surprising anthropologists who at first assumed they were our intellectual inferiors, but it seems they had a culture almost as complex as ours. No doubt they carried out rituals like us.
Elephants have been known to bury their dead in branches and leaves for no other reason then to cover them up. They gather around the body and just stand their for hours and sometimes yell (or whatever you want to call it when elephants make sounds). That sounds suspiciously like a human funeral to me.
Rituals are probably a lot older than mankind.
